The Best Time to Lay Sod in London, Ontario (2025 Guide)
One of the most common questions we hear from London homeowners is simple: when should I lay new sod? It matters more than most people expect. Install at the right time and your lawn roots in within a couple of weeks and sails through its first season. Install at the wrong time and you're fighting heat stress, drought or frost — and often paying to redo it. Here's how the timing actually works in our Southwestern Ontario climate.
Spring: A Reliable Window
From late April through early June, London's soil has warmed enough for roots to take hold while air temperatures stay mild and rainfall is frequent. This is the sweet spot most years. New sod needs consistent moisture to knit into the soil below, and spring's natural rain does a lot of that watering for you. The main risk is waiting too long — sod laid in late June or July hits summer heat before it's established, which means heavy daily watering just to keep it alive.
Fall: Often the Best of All
Many landscapers, us included, consider early fall — roughly late August through early October — the single best window in our region. The soil is still warm from summer, which drives root growth, but the cooler air and morning dew dramatically reduce moisture stress on the new grass. Sod laid in September typically establishes beautifully and greens up early the following spring. The cutoff matters, though: you want roots set before the first hard frost, so we don't recommend laying sod past mid-to-late October in London.
Summer: Possible, But Demanding
You can lay sod in July and August, and sometimes a project's timing leaves no choice. Just go in with eyes open: peak summer installs need diligent watering — often twice a day in the first week — and even then, heat waves can scorch fresh sod. If you're installing in summer, early morning is best, and the irrigation plan is non-negotiable.
Winter: Wait
Once the ground freezes, sod can't root, and laying it on frozen soil simply doesn't work. From roughly November through March, the right move is to plan and quote your project so you're first in line when the ground reopens in spring.
Prep Is Half the Battle
Timing only pays off if the base is right. Good sod installation in London means removing old turf and weeds, grading for proper drainage away from the house, adding quality topsoil and ensuring solid soil-to-sod contact. Skip the prep and even perfectly timed sod struggles. The Bottom Line
For most London, Ontario homeowners, aim for spring (late April–early June) or, better yet, early fall (late August–early October). Avoid mid-summer heat and frozen ground.
