Ice Management 101: Safe Walkways in a London Winter

You can clear every flake of snow and still have a dangerous property if the walkways ice over. Ice management is the quieter half of winter maintenance, and in London it's where most falls actually happen.

Why Walkways Ice Over

Walkways ice for predictable reasons: snow melts during the day and refreezes overnight, freezing rain glazes the surface, or runoff from a roof or downspout crosses the path and freezes. None of these require heavy snowfall — which is why plowing alone doesn't keep walkways safe.

The Melt-Refreeze Trap

London's winters swing above and below freezing constantly. A sunny afternoon melts snow into water that runs onto walkways, then the temperature drops and it becomes a sheet of clear, nearly invisible ice by morning. This is the single most dangerous winter surface, and it forms without any new snow.

Salt Before, Not After

The best ice control is applied ahead of a freeze — before freezing rain, before an overnight drop — so ice never bonds to the surface. Reacting after ice has formed is slower and less effective. A monitored program with an ice trigger handles this proactively.

Priority Zones
