Good hardscaping in London, Ontario is invisible work made visible. What you see is a beautiful interlocking patio or a crisp concrete pad; what makes it last is everything underneath — the excavation depth, the compacted granular base, the bedding layer and the drainage plan. London's clay-heavy soil and aggressive freeze-thaw cycles punish shortcuts mercilessly: pavers heave, walkways ripple, and patios that looked perfect in June develop trip edges by the following spring. JSQ Gardens builds the base properly every time, which is why we're comfortable putting a 2-year workmanship warranty on every project.

Fix-It Specialists

We routinely rescue failed projects — heaved patios, sinking walkways, walls leaning after one winter.

Interlocking Stone Done Properly

An interlock patio or walkway in London should sit on 8 to 12 inches of compacted granular base — more for driveways — with a screeded bedding layer, tight paver joints, soldier-course edges and solid edge restraint. We see countless local projects built on 3 inches of limestone screening over raw clay; they look fine for a season, then ripple. Our process means your patio in Lambeth, your front walkway in Wortley Village or your pool deck in Komoka stays as flat in year ten as on day one. Not sure whether interlock or poured concrete is right for you? Our comparison guide on interlocking stone vs. concrete patios breaks down cost, longevity and repairability for local conditions.

Retaining Walls & Grade Changes

London has more elevation change than people expect — ravine lots in Byron, sloped backyards in Oakridge, walkout basements across the north end. A properly built retaining wall turns an unusable slope into flat, functional space. We build segmental block walls with geogrid reinforcement where heights demand it, clear-stone backfill, and perforated drainage pipe so hydrostatic pressure never gets the chance to push the wall out. Walls pair beautifully with new garden beds and plantings above or below.

Fixing Other Contractors' Grading Mistakes

A surprising share of our hardscaping calls start with the sentence "another company did this two years ago." Patios pitched toward the house. Walkways that pond water. Window wells flooding every March. We diagnose what went wrong, give you a straight answer about whether the surface can be lifted and re-based or needs rebuilding, and quote the real fix — not a cosmetic patch. If a failed grade has killed your lawn too, we can regrade and re-sod in the same project through our sod installation service.

Hardscaping FAQs

How deep should the base be for an interlock patio in London?

For patios and walkways we excavate and compact 8–12 inches of granular base; driveways need more. London's clay and frost cycles make a deep, well-compacted base non-negotiable for a flat, lasting surface.

Can you repair a heaved or sunken patio instead of replacing it?

Often yes. If the pavers are sound, we can lift the affected area, rebuild and re-compact the base, and relay the same stones. If the base was never built properly, a rebuild is usually the honest answer — we'll tell you which it is.

How long does a patio project take?

Most residential patios take three to five working days from excavation to final polymeric sand. Retaining walls and combined projects run longer; we give you a clear schedule before starting.

Do retaining walls need drainage?

Always. Every wall we build gets clear-stone backfill and perforated drain pipe so water pressure never builds behind it — the missing ingredient in most leaning walls we're called to fix.

Is interlock or concrete better for our climate?

Both work well when built correctly. Interlock is repairable stone-by-stone and handles frost movement gracefully; concrete is lower-maintenance but cracks are permanent. We'll recommend based on your site, budget and style.
